Changes in Custody and Visitation

The practice of child custody law has changed dramatically in the last few decades. In the past, a wife almost always got custody, while a husband got visitation. The only real issue was how visitation should be arranged.

Many objected to this, and changed were made. Now, judges can and often do opt for joint custody. One parent may be given the designation of "primary custodian" and the other "secondary," or "alternative" custodian.

Typically, when ex-spouses have joint custody, they are expected to share responsibility for major decisions in the children's lives, including everything from religious education to medical care. If you do not believe it will be possible to communicate with your ex-spouse and make these decisions together, you may be better off with a more traditional custody and visitation arrangement.

Whether they have joint legal or joint legal and physical custody, parents are entitled to have knowledge of every aspect of the child’s life, including, health, education and extra-curricular activities. These issues often arise in custody/visitation cases.

Thorough Preparation of Cases

A key to winning cases involving child custody is in building strong arguments based on the testimony of many experts. Our child custody lawyers regularly hire social workers, medical doctors, psychiatrists, and other experts to evaluate living situations and give their assessments about the ideal situation for the child's well-being.
